Since 1966, our union has been dedicated to helping members and their dependents reach their educational goals. Just this year, 22 members and dependents were awarded a total of $45,000 across all scholarships.
Hear from a few 2025 scholarship recipients on how this financial support has made a difference:
Meet Megan Nashiwa
With ambitions to become a public sector attorney, Megan Nashiwa, Unit 3 member and buyer for the Maui County Finance Dept., is this year’s Charles R. Kendall $3,000 scholarship awardee.
Funding her academic journey hasn’t been easy. Megan works two jobs to cover the costly tuition fees and is grateful for the financial relief that this scholarship provides. She hopes her story can encourage younger members to realize the benefits of joining a union.
Meet Jeannie and Kimo Moniz-Kekumu
As mother-and-son duo recipients of the Charles R. Kendall Scholarship, Jeannie and Kimo Moniz-Kekumu are pursuing their education so they can make a difference in the lives of students.
Jeannie, a Unit 3 member and education assistant, is working on her master’s in special education at Grand Canyon University. She has been a union steward for more than 25 years. Kimo, a student at the University of Hawaii, Maui College, is pursuing a degree in Hawaiian studies. Inspired by their own family and community members, both have big dreams to give back as educators.
If only 3,000 members give just $1 per paycheck through payroll deduction, we would raise $70,000 a year toward sending dependents of members — and members themselves — to college. Please consider helping members and dependents like these by donating today.
